Mazzilli Dance Theatre aims to develop awareness and challenge audiences’ perceptions of society and of contemporary dance, with work which represents reality in its themes, movement vocabulary and venues used. With the believe that a piece of dance is organic and can adopt many personas, costumes and everyday life objects are used as props to create a connection between the ordinary world and the more abstract world of dance and theatre. Mazzilli Dance Theatre also creates site-specific work to explore the ever-changing relationship between the venue, the audience, the dancer and the choreography.

Annarita Mazzilli
started Mazzilli Dance Theatre in 2011. She is from Bari in Italy. In 2003 she graduated with a BA in Dance from Bretton Hall College (Leeds University), and in 2005 attained a Higher National Diploma in Dance Performance from the Scottish School of Contemporary Dance (The Space). The following year she became a member of Transitions Dance Company and completed her MA in Dance Performance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. She has studied with, among others, choreographers Crystal Pite, Janet Smith, Thomas Small, David Hughes, Athina Vahla, Janis Claxton and Jane Mason.
Since completing her training Annarita has performed at many different events and venues. These include Beijing International Dance Festival 2013, La Strada Fashion Circus (O2 Arena, 2011), Kinaesthetic - Fashion Vs Costumes (Sadler's Wells Theatre, 2009) the Dialogue and Body-words festivals in St Petersburg (2007 & 2009 respectively), Resolutions (The Place, 2007-2010), Choreodrome (The Place, 2005) and the Dansopolis Community Dance Festival (Leeds Town Hall, 2004). Throughout this period she was also a regular member of the Anneliese Monika Koch Dance Theatre Company (UK & Austria), with whom she performed both within the UK and abroad. She is now an associate artist of Dance Physics and La Strada Fashion Circus and movement director for Lumenis Theatre Company.
Annarita also teaches dance to professionals and non-professionals in the UK. She is lead tutor of Performing Arts at Idea Store Learning in London (funded by Tower Hamlets Council) and associate lecturer at Surrey University (Guildford School of Acting).
